England vs United States

England get their much awaited World Cup 2010 finals campaign off tomorrow against their former colonists in the United States, looking to continue their undefeated run in this World Cup campaign with another victory and stamp their authority really early in the tournament.

Fabio Capello has instilled a high level of discipline in this team after their failure to qualify for Euro 2008 and with his new regimen in place, the England players themselves are feeling a higher level of performance and standards, where the manager treats all players as equal, with no places assured, making sure each of them work hard to prove themselves worthy.

Joe Cole is now without a club, is now looking to make a start in this team in the place of the injured Gareth Barry, which will be really good for captain Stevie G, who gets to sit in the middle of the park with Joe Cole heading up the left wing. There is some selection dilemma for Capello regarding the goalkeeper but Rob Green should look to start between the posts.

The Americans are constant qualifiers for this tournament and will look to create another impression much like they did in the last FIFA Confederations Cup but will face a different kettle of fish in a more determined England team in this campaign. With players such as Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Jerome Altidore,  Tim Howard making their mark this year outside the United States, they would have gained some valuable experience that will enable them to play with the best of players in the England team.

However, it has been almost 60 years since the US beat England in a World Cup match way back in 1950, and with England really a strong outfit and players like Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney in top form heading into this tournament, I expect nothing less than an England win by a couple of goals, and should definitely make the quarter finals of the tournament.
