Australia were my early tournament favorites, but I just never put this pick because I wanted to see if India could make it through to the semi finals, then it would be a tough ask for the Aussies.
Australia have outplayed every team in this tournament in all departments and are definitely the most strongest team on paper and on form in this tournament.
The openers Warner and Watson give them a solid foundation, bashing the ball to all corners of the ground with ease and followed by Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke, give a good stability in the middle order. At 5 and 6 comes the most experienced T20 players in the Aussie line up with David Hussey and Cameron White who can either pick up the singles and keep the scoring ticking or else get some quick fire runs by clearing the boundary. And at 7, we have Mr. Cool himself Michael Hussey to do the finishing job for the batting lineup in case there are a few hiccups or last minute runs required at the end of the innings.
When it comes to the bowling department, Nannes has for long been the premier T20 bowler whether in International, Domestic or even IPL Cricket, he has been the one difficult to get away. Add to him the spearhead of Australia's attack in Mitchell Johnson and the raw pace of Shaun Tait clocking 160 km/h and you have got a lethal trio of seamers who can handle any condition.
But now comes one of my favorite players in the Australian team who I have been watching on the domestic circuit for some time in the young all-rounder Steve Smith. The youngster debuting for Australia this season has some good leg-spin bowling behind him, in the mould of Shane Warne. Additionally he can chip in with some valuable runs as he did against Bangladesh when Australia were in trouble at 65-6.
Add to that the convincing manner of the performances which they have been winning, coming out of losing positions like 65-6 against Bangladesh, and 67-5 against Sri Lanka has been a true testament to the squad that has been developed and picked with T20 specialists.
This is finally the moment where Australia gets their hand on the one World Championship that's missing in the trophy cupboard.
